Trauma Informed Care For Schools
“When a flower doesn’t bloom you fix the environment in which it grows, not the flower.”
~Alexander Den Heijer
Your vision to have a school that not only effectively addresses student academic needs, but also effectively addresses the social and emotional needs of the entire school community is 100% attainable.
Behavior management consultation and coaching is an exemplary way to support teachers, school leaders, climate teams, and support staff in developing the skills needed to address student concerns through a trauma-informed and culturally responsive lens.
Working with a licensed mental health professional with extensive experience working in K-12 schools will help your team receive trauma-informed and culturally responsive evidence-based training and behavioral management interventions that will improve classroom management skills, staff and student relationships, and strengthen the school climate and culture.
Behavior Management Consultation & Coaching For The School Community
Speak Life Transformation provides trauma-informed and culturally responsive behavior management coaching and consultation to K-12 schools. This level of coaching can help restore relationships throughout the school community.
These skills increase student engagement and help rebuild a positive school culture that motivates students to attend school regularly. They also reframe staff mindset to culturally responsive, student focus, and solutions-oriented thinking.
What We Do
We help school leaders, teachers, and support staff learn how to implement trauma-informed and culturally responsive practices. These practices help improve the use of equitable interventions, strengthen PBIS systems, and effectively use alternative disciplinary interventions such as Collaborative Problem Solving and Restorative Practices.
Through this work, we help school communities cultivate a culturally responsive approach that improves student academic growth and decreases teacher burnout.
Creating Trauma Informed Schools & Trauma Informed Classrooms That Support Student & Staff Needs
Through evidence-based practices in trauma-informed and culturally responsive care, we teach educators how to use a holistic approach when assessing the needs of all students. This approach helps the school team consider the child’s background such as culture, school, health, and any possible adverse childhood experience (ACE).
Gaining an Understanding of the Why Behind Student Behaviors
We understand how a student’s life outside of the classroom can significantly impact how they show up inside the classroom. Our trauma-informed care practices and culturally responsive training will increase the likelihood of school staff exploring the “why” behind the student’s behavior. This allows staff to implement effective interventions and create trauma-informed and culturally responsive classrooms.
The Importance of Self-Care and Support
Our trauma -informed and culturally responsive trainings not only teaches staff how to effectively support students, but also each other. Many educators experience secondary-trauma aka compassion fatigue. This level of stress impacts their ability to perform their best work as their best self. Also, they have their own cultural identity and implicit biases that shape their educational expectations. We teach self-awareness practices and stress management skills for increasing awareness of personal fears and biases, preventing burnout, and reducing stress and anxiety.
